{"id":9358,"date":"2025-10-08T10:09:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T09:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/babyandchild.nl\/?post_type=medewerkers&#038;p=9358"},"modified":"2026-02-10T12:08:52","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T11:08:52","slug":"jule-hafermann","status":"publish","type":"medewerkers","link":"https:\/\/babyandchild.nl\/en\/medewerkers\/jule-hafermann\/","title":{"rendered":"Jule Hafermann"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"translation-block\">I am a researcher in the <a href=\"https:\/\/babyandchild.nl\/en\/?onderzoeken=babybrain\" target=\"_self\">BabyBRAIN-groep<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/babyandchild.nl\/en\/?onderzoeken=language-and-development\" target=\"_self\">Afdeling Taalontwikkeling<\/a> at the Max Planck Institute in Nijmegen. Before starting my PhD in October 2024, I did a research masters in Cognitive Neuroscience, specialising in language and communication. During my PhD, I investigate the mechanisms underlying infants\u2019 language development. I am fascinated by how quickly infants learn to understand their first language and aim to better understand how they do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rol van verwachtingen<\/strong><br>In mijn eerste project kijk ik of peuters en kleuters al voorspellingen doen over aankomende klanken en woorden op basis van hun taalkennis. Stel bijvoorbeeld dat kinderen naar een verhaal luisteren en horen: <em>\u201cDe kleine ijsbeer woont op de Noordpool waar veel ijs en &#8230;\u201d<\/em>. Dan verwachten ze waarschijnlijk het woord <em>sneeuw<\/em> en zouden ze meer verrast zijn als het volgende woord <em>zonneschijn<\/em> was. De volgende keer dat ze <em>\u201cijs en &#8230;\u201d<\/em> horen, zouden ze echter minder verrast kunnen zijn als opnieuw <em>zonneschijn<\/em> volgt, omdat ze uit hun eerdere ervaring hebben geleerd dat dit ook een mogelijkheid is. Verschillen tussen wat een kind verwacht en wat het daadwerkelijk hoort, kunnen daarom belangrijk zijn voor taalverwerving. Voor dit project maak ik gebruik van verschillende methoden, waaronder computationele modellen, EEG en gedragsdata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Infant-directed speech<\/strong><br>Moreover, I am interested in how the language input children receive influences their attention and language development. Many adults change their way of speaking when they are addressing an infant or young child compared to when they are talking to another adult. This adaptation is called <em>infant-\/child-directed speech<\/em>, while <em>adult-directed speech<\/em> describes how adults usually talk to each other. It has been shown that infants and children can differentiate between the two styles of speaking and seem to pay more attention to <em>infant-\/child-directed speech<\/em>.
